Hi there, my name is Michael Kirkpatrick Miller, and I am a historian of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. This is my personal website. As of June 2025, I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of History at Cornell University, where I am finishing up my dissertation. I graduated with a B.A. in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2013, with highest distinction honors.

My research centers on the histories of empire, gender, and veterinary medicine in Eastern Indonesia. My dissertation analyzes imperial and indigenous ideologies of masculinity in the Dutch East Indies popular press. My second book project investigates the ecological impacts of colonial veterinarians on five distinct islands in the Pacific. I also spend some of my time researching and writing about the history of football (soccer) in Indonesia and colonial fusion cuisine in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

I teach courses at Cornell in Ithaca, NY and at the Auburn Correctional Facility in Auburn, NY.

I usually live in Ithaca, NY, with my partner and our two cats, Fern-Gourdy and Macaroni. Sometimes I am in Jakarta, Ambon, or Den Haag.
